Test #10 notes

On the "Test #10 Sample Solutions" that you received today, I inadvertently wrote "-..." in #6 and it should be "+..."

The answer to #7 in the "Additional Review Question" in the review packet has an error.  Instead of |x|<2/3, it should be |x|<3/2.

Also, as mentioned during class, the multiple choice and free response will each be worth 50% of the test.  However, there will be 11 (not 10) multiple choice that will be worth 5 points for each correct answer.  This means you will essentially get one free mistake in the multiple choice.  There will be 2 free response questions each with multiple parts.

I would suggest that you spend 20-25 minutes on the multiple choice and 25-30 minutes on the free response.

You will be given one of my graphing calculators to use during the test.

Good luck!

Homework reminder

9.2 #1-11 odds and 9.3 #1-11 odds are due Tuesday, March 29 at the beginning of class.
Some suggestions:
  • 9.2 #7: you will need to determine the t value for the point (-1, 0)
  • 9.3 #1: use limits t = 0 to t = 2pi (this will trace the curve once - check on your calculator)
  • 9.3 #5: use limits t = 0 to t = pi/2 (this will trace the curve once - check on your calculator)
  • If you want to try the 9.3 bonus problems (#21, 23, 25), read pages 738-739 in your text including example 3.4)
Also, be sure to try the 2004 free response sample and the "Additional Review Questions" #11 & 12 before class on Tuesday.

The final stretch...

  • The AP Calculus BC exam is on May 4, 2011 at 8:00 AM (44 days from today)
  • We have 29 days of class from March 21 to May 3 (however, some of you will be taking other AP exams on May 2 and/or May 3 and will miss some of our review time)
  • We have 8 sections in the textbook and 2 tests left before the AP exam (test #10 covering 8.6-8.8 on March 31 and test #11 covering 9.1-9.5 & 11.2-11.3 "take-home" on April 13)
  • We have 14 days in class to review for the AP exam (starting on April 8) and will cover the following
    • 2003 multiple choice (45 questions)
    • 2003 free response (6 questions)
    • 2010 free response (6 questions)
    • Practice free response (6 questions)
    • Practice multiple choice (45 questions)
    • 2009 Free Response (6 questions)
    • Note: you have many other sample questions in your AP review packet to try on your own
We still have a lot of work to do, but it will all payoff soon on May 4!  Hang in there!

Spring break

I trust that everyone is having a nice break.
Please remember to set aside time for 8.7 homework catchup, reviewing test #9, and starting to review for the AP exam. I know we will all be well rested and ready to finish chapter 8 on Monday!

Test #10 date change

I have moved test #10 (sections 8.6-8.8) from March 24 to March 31 to provide everyone with more time to internalize the concepts in these sections and to gain an extra day of in-class review.
Updated March and April calendars.

Taylor series and polynomials

This weekend, please work on the 8.7 HW p. 683 #1-13 odds, 15, 17, 21, 25ab, 29, 31, 53 AND on the sample test #9 problems.  Our focus on Monday will be on the sample test problems with groups sharing solutions:

1 - #1,18
2 - #2,17
3 - #3,8,16
4 - #4,15
5 - #5,14
6 - #6,12,13
7 - #7,11
8 - #9,10

A nice overview of Taylor series and polynomials can be found in videos #54 (skip slides 6-9) and #55 (slides 5, 6, 11 have (interesting) theory that AP does not require) on the UH site: http://online.math.uh.edu/HoustonACT/videocalculus/index.html
You'll need Quicktime to view these and they do not stream, so they take a while to load.

March

I have updated our March calendar since we will need more time with 8.7 this week than I had originally planned.  http://www.bellaire.org/mazzoni/apcalc/apcalendars/ap1103.pdf.
